Conservation grazing

Native breeds, traditional methods, thriving landscapes.

Maydencroft Manor is more than a stunning venue, it’s the heart of a family-run native breeds farm dedicated to sustainable, low-input farming and pioneering conservation grazing across Hertfordshire and beyond.

Owned and managed by the Williams family, our passion for English Longhorn cattle and heritage breed sheep is reflected in everything we do. We believe in traditional farming methods that nurture animal welfare, enrich wildlife habitats, and restore historic landscapes.

What is conservation grazing?

Conservation grazing is the use of carefully selected native breeds to manage and improve wildlife diversity on sensitive or historic landscapes.

Unlike intensive agriculture, our approach involves:

  • Grazing extensively with fewer animals rotated regularly over large areas
  • Minimising or eliminating chemical inputs such as pesticides and fertilisers
  • Maintaining wildflower-rich grasslands, parklands, and meadows
  • Preserving historic land features and habitats

Our native English Longhorn cattle are perfectly suited to this work, eating a broad range of natural vegetation, including aggressive weeds and scrub that can dominate unmanaged land, helping maintain a balanced and thriving ecosystem.

    The Maydencroft Manor Longhorn herd

Our herd was established in 1984 by Robert and Frances Williams. Robert’s childhood love for these gentle, brindled beasts grew into a lifelong commitment to preserving this rare breed and promoting conservation grazing.

Today, under Tom Williams’s stewardship, the herd numbers around 200 and grazes a mix of owned pasture and high-profile conservation sites across Hertfordshire, including:

    • Panshanger Park, a historic Grade II listed parkland known for its ancient oak trees and wildlife-rich meadows
    • Pishiobury Park, another celebrated site where conservation grazing supports landscape restoration and biodiversity

    A historic and rare breed

English Longhorns date back to the 1600s and were once critically endangered, with fewer than 200 breeding animals worldwide in the 1980s.

Known for their large size, brindled coats, and sweeping horns, Longhorns are calm-natured and hardy. These traits make them ideal for conservation grazing on unimproved grasslands, where their grazing keeps scrub and weeds in check, allowing diverse plant and insect life to flourish.

Beyond Maydencroft Manor, our Longhorn cattle and heritage sheep actively manage conservation sites, helping maintain and restore:

    • Wildflower meadows and chalk grasslands
    • Ancient wood pastures and historic parklands
    • Floodplain meadows and wetlands
    • Rural and urban green spaces

Our approach promotes resilient, biodiverse habitats that benefit plants, birds, insects, and people alike.

Buy native breed beef & support conservation

We offer beef from our Longhorn steers raised under these traditional, high welfare standards. Because our farming is extensive and seasonal, availability varies throughout the year.

Purchasing from us supports the survival of native breeds and helps fund ongoing conservation grazing projects.
